James Arthur was born in Connecticut and raised in Canada. His debut poetry collection is entitled Charms against Lightning (Copper Canyon Press, 2012). Arthur has taught composition at Northwest Missouri State University and is an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins. He lives in the Baltimore area with his wife, the fiction writer Shannon Robinson.

These deceptively playful rhymed poems are small fables of everyday existence. In these lively readings, one character receives a visit from a provocative and troubled acquaintance; another’s bundled shadow takes him on a walk through a raw fall day. And in “Omnivore,” one of Narrative’s Top 5 Poems of the Week last year, a guiding principle is revealed: “I eat what’s put in front of me . . . feed yourself or die.”
