Ani Katz, a finalist in the 2013 Narrative 30 Below Contest, was born and raised on Long Island. After graduating from Yale University in 2008, she cofounded Recession Art, a Brooklyn-based organization devoted to exhibiting emerging artists. Her work has been exhibited at Project Basho in Philadelphia, the Islip Art Museum in New York, the Center for Book and Paper Arts in Chicago, and the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China. Katz received her MFA in photography at Columbia College (2014).

A Story

I watched his neck move as he drank.

Jack slipped the whiskey back into the slot between the driver’s seat and the stick shift, crooked his arm around the neck of the girl sitting next to him and kissed her, openmouthed and open-eyed, while looking at me in the backseat. The two of them broke apart with a loud and satisfied noise, like someone getting hit. Jack reached around and grabbed my knee.

“Where to, ladies?” he asked, grinning and squeezing.
