Alma García is the winner of the 2004 Dana Award in Short Fiction. She holds an MFA from the University of Arizona. A former journalist and occasional teacher, García grew up in West Texas and has spent most of her life in New Mexico. She now lives with her husband in Seattle, where she is at work on a collection of linked short stories.

At Narrative Night, Seattle, in November 2008, García gave a virtuoso reading from her novel in progress, which takes place in El Paso, where a man wakes to find himself abandoned by his wife and then throughout a day struggles anxiously and finally comically to regain himself in his children’s eyes. The piece is rich in detail, and the ending is as tender as it is humorous.
